Webinar Description:

This webinar will cover the fundamentals of sustainable and regenerative soil management.  Topics include soil building on the landscape, the building and managing of compost, raising worms (vermicompost), making and using biochar, and utilizing compost teas and ferments. His methods are accessible, affordable and easy, providing a direct approach to addressing Climate Change.

 

Presenter:

Miguel has a Master of Science Degree in Agriculture Ecology from UC Davis and has been farming and building soil on his Sol Feliz Farm for over 20 years.  He has several composting methods including compost piles, composting with worms, biochar, and water harvesting/soil building on the landscape.  His soil building techniques were featured in the documentary “350: the most important number” directed by Beezhan Tulu on Apple Books.

Recording from December 11, 2024 – Maize traditions.  Learn about the history, biology, cultivation, cultural importance, and uses/foods of maize (aka corn) as a focal point of a relationship to land, water, and culture as well as her role in creating a sustainable future and becoming the human beings we were meant to be.

Recording from January 15, 2025 – Sustainability 101 & Arid-lands Permaculture.  Learn about the fundamentals of Drylands Permaculture with an emphasis on Ecological understanding to generate ideas for the design and creation of regenerative, optimized, and sustainable lifeways & systems in the context of Climate Change.  Emphasis on hope and capability.

Recording from February 12, 2025 – Seeds and Crops. Learn about the fundamentals of seeds, seed saving, and crop diversity; especially with regard to the desert Southwest. Methods of seed selection, seed processing (wet, dry, and root cellar), and crop adaptation in the context of climate change will be covered.

March 5, 2025 – Soils and Soil Building.  Learn about the fundamentals of sustainable and regenerative soil management.  Topics include soil building on the landscape, the building and managing of compost, raising worms (vermicompost), making and using biochar, and utilizing compost teas and ferments.

March 19, 2025 – Acequias 101.  Learn about the history, culture, and ecology of acequia irrigation structures and communities in northern New Mexico and southern Colorado. We will also discuss food traditions, agricultural methods, crop types, and challenges to the survival of acequia culture.
