Cultivating, planting, and irrigating Sol Feliz

posted in: AIRE, Sol Feliz Farm | 0

Today our “Sembradores” youth team is cultivating weeds, planting and irrigating. We cut down the weeds to give our plants the confidence that they are the important ones in the garden. We are planting in a milpa system, associating beans with our maize and planting a squash plant or two in every row. The spacing between our maize/beans is about 3 or 4 feet, to give them enough room to find soil nutrient and water on their own, especially after drought conditions arrive, should they arrive… And as we are irrigating from Acequia Madre del Sur del Rio de Don Fernando de Taos we will flood the fields with a few hours of water to make sure the subsurface soil gets plenty of water for the germination of our seeds…
