Here is a nice representative picture of our milpa with the squash in center stage. You can see the beans on the left and the corn behind and on the right. The squash are flowing and the plants are huge! We have several baby squash (calabacitas) forming now, we may be harvesting some next week.
I showed the students how to tell the differences between the male and female flowers on the squash plant, noting that the male flowers are edible, yummy, and high in vitamin C. I have heard the more male flowers are harvested the more the plant produces. I hear this is the same for the calabacitas, that the more you harvest, the more they form… More evidence of abundance!
