Amending the soil at Parr Field

We purchased two yards of high-quality compost to amend the soil at Parr Field.  We have already tilled and made rows with the plans of “planting” compost in the much of the same way we plant crops.  This method was prohibitive in time and energy so we decided to dump buckets of compost down the rows, till them in, and reform the rows afterwards.

We used a 5 gallon bucket full of compost for approximately every 20 row feet.  Using this kind of distribution, we went through our entire two yards of compost for the beds and rows at Parr Field.  It was especially important for us to have soil fertility to ensure the success of this field.  In the future we may try cover cropping or green manure to maintain and enhance our soil fertility…
